Why the gap exists at all
Google Business Profile was built to answer one question: which business is closest, most relevant, and most established for this search. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity answer a different question - "what best fits what this person actually asked" - and to answer it, they don't rely on a single business profile. They pull information from various sources across the web and merge it into one answer. A business whose entire digital presence is concentrated in a Google Business Profile - no website with clear content, no consistent mentions elsewhere - simply doesn't give AI engines enough material to cite.
The gap, in numbers
The same SOCi index also checked the accuracy of the information AI engines show about businesses, not just the recommendation rate. Business profile details were accurate in about 68% of cases on ChatGPT and Perplexity, compared with 100% accuracy on Gemini - because Gemini is grounded directly in Google Maps, while ChatGPT and Perplexity assemble their answer from more scattered sources. The reputation bar also differs across platforms: businesses recommended by ChatGPT averaged a 4.3-star rating, Gemini 3.9, and Perplexity 4.1 (source: searchengineland.com).
Google Maps itself is changing too
The gap isn't only between Google and AI engines - it's happening inside Google itself. Q2 2026 data shows U.S. calls and website clicks from Google Business Profile down 11.9% and 12.5% respectively, while direction requests are up 21.1% - meaning more and more customers are completing the entire journey inside Google Maps itself, without ever reaching the website or making a call (source: searchengineland.com). The result: even within Google, a business depends more and more on the profile itself, and less on the customer ever reaching the website.
What you can actually do about it
- A complete, accurate Google Business Profile - hours, services, photos, service area - because Gemini pulls directly from it, and Maps ranking still depends on it too.
- A website with content that directly answers real customer questions (not just a generic "about" page), so engines that aren't grounded in Maps have something concrete to cite.
- Full consistency in name, address, and phone number everywhere the business is mentioned online - directories, Facebook, industry sites - because inconsistency is exactly what drives the low accuracy we saw on ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Keeping a strong review rating across every platform, not just Google - all three engines mainly recommend businesses rated 3.9 stars and above.
There's also a broader principle here that shows up across everything related to AI visibility: AI engines disproportionately cite the first 30% of a document - a study found that 44.2% of ChatGPT's citations come from the beginning of a document (source: searchengineland.com). That's true for a local business's "about" page too - if the answer to "do you service area X" is buried in the fifth paragraph, the engine probably never reaches it.
